Upper Mustang Region

Upper Mustang lies in the remote and isolated Trans Himalayan Region of Nepal. It used to be a separate kingdom known as the kingdom of Lo with a royal family ruling over the region from its walled capital of Lo-Manthang.  Monarchy was abolished once Nepal became a democratic republic in 2008.  Upper Mustang is one of the oldest inhabited regions in the Himalayas. Its arid and desert-like landscape is filled with ancient Buddhist monasteries, deep river gorges, wind-swept canyons, and quaint settlements that seem suspended in time. The region is famous for its Sky Caves where archeologists have discovered mummified human remains, Buddhist relics, and artifacts dating back more than two thousand years.

A journey into Upper Mustang will take you to a high-altitude desert and the secluded settlements of Buddhist communities that share close ties with Tibet. Here you will experience the authentic Tibetan lifestyle and culture. With the flat-roofed mud houses, enormous clay chortens, villagers herding yaks dressed in their traditional chuba, and an occasional horseman riding across the hills, Upper Mustang certainly gives you the vibe of being in the middle of the Tibetan highlands,

Most treks to Upper Mustang begin with a flight to Jomsom, a Thakkali hub in Lower Mustang. Jomsom has the only airport in the region. There's also a rough jeep track that connects Mustang with Pokhara, the nearest city. In recent years the government of Nepal has worked on making the region more accessible by building roads. While the condition of these roads can't be called 'excellent' they are okay for 4WD land cruisers and off-road bike tours.

One can explore Upper Mustang on foot, by vehicle (overland jeep tour), or via a two-wheeler (motorbike or bicycle). It is the only trekking region in Nepal which remains dry during the monsoon season. Some of the popular destinations in Upper Mustang are the walled city of Lo Manthang, Kagbeni, the Sky Caves of Chhusang, Choser, and Tetang, the grand canyon of Charang Chu, Rachen Gompa, and the mountain passes of Saribung La and Teri La. The most popular trek in the region is the Upper Mustang Trek.
