A team of mountain guides and trainees has successfully made the first ascent of Bhabhaya Himal (Lyahuel Peak), 6,396 meters high, in the Api Himal region of Darchula district.
According to Bhakta Singh Bohara, chairperson of Api Himal Rural Municipality, the seven-member team reached the summit on Thursday as part of a professional mountain guide training program. The training was organized in coordination with the rural municipality to promote the tourism potential of the area.
The successful climbers included instructors Lal Bahadur Jirel, Ramkaji Tiwari, and Rakeshraj Tamang, along with trainees Suryaman Tamang, Suraj Tamang, Bhishan Yonjan, and Dali Sherpa.
Bhabhaya Himal lies to the right of Api Himal (7,131 meters), the highest mountain in Sudurpaschim Province. Local authorities say they are focusing on developing trekking routes, tourist lodges, and other infrastructure to attract more climbers and visitors.
To encourage mountaineering in the far-western region, the federal government had previously waived climbing fees for 97 peaks in Far West Nepal and Karnali provinces for a period of two years.
