June 3: Important Day for Mountain Climbing

Important Day for Mountain Climbing

Only 407 people have climbed Annapurna-I in the last 74 years. This mountain is known as the "eldest mountain of climbing."

74 years ago, on June 3, 1950, Maurice Herzog from France and his companion Louis Lachenal were the first to climb Annapurna-I. This mountain is 8,091 meters high. Their success started the trend of climbing other 8,000-meter-high mountains. That's why June 3 is seen as the starting point of adventure climbing.

Manshant Ghimire from the Nepal Mountaineering Association says, "Herzog climbed Annapurna when no one had climbed a mountain above 8,000 meters. This was the start of modern mountaineering."

Three years after Herzog, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa climbed Mount Everest on May 29, 1953.

Even though Annapurna is the oldest climbed mountain, it is not very popular. By 2023, only 407 people have climbed it. This number is much lower compared to other mountains. Annapurna is the 10th highest mountain in the world, but it is known as a dangerous mountain. Sheshkant Sharma from the Nepal Mountaineering Association says, "For every 100 people who try, 33 die. Only very brave climbers attempt it."

Annapurna is more dangerous because climbers must prepare their own ropes. Unlike Mount Everest, there are no ropes already set up. This makes it difficult and expensive, so many climbers avoid it.
