A permanent medical facility opens at Goraksep, offering vital services to trekkers and climbers tackling the Everest route.

Nestled at the threshold of Mount Everest's towering presence, a pioneering initiative has taken root with the establishment of a fully-equipped health post. Situated at a formidable altitude of 5,180 meters, the "Goraksep High Altitude Clinic" emerges as a beacon of medical assistance along the iconic Everest trekking route, courtesy of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu.

On May 27th, the clinic's inauguration, spearheaded by the village chairman, Mingmachiri Sherpa, heralded a new era of healthcare accessibility in the region. Representing a remarkable feat, this permanent structure at Goraksep is touted as potentially the world's highest government-operated clinic.

Jagat Prasad Bhusal, the village's chief administrative officer, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of this endeavor, stating, "No other government has established a permanent presence at such an altitude. Our aim is to furnish comprehensive high-altitude services to the locals and adventurers alike."

Goraksep, a vital stop en route to the Everest Base Camp, previously hosted a seasonal private clinic. However, concerns over fraudulent rescue operations prompted the rural municipality to intervene, replacing the private facility with a government-run clinic. This move extends to Dingboche, another stop on the Khumbu trail, where a similar transition is underway.

"Our mission extends beyond mere medical aid; we aim to safeguard our nation's reputation by curbing malpractices and alleviating the financial burden on tourists imposed by private clinics," Bhusal said.

The clinic, secured through an annual lease agreement, boasts two spacious rooms and accommodates three beds for inpatients. Staffed by a team comprising an MBBS doctor, a Health Assistant, and auxiliary personnel, the facility ensures prompt treatment for visitors facing high-altitude ailments.

Acknowledging the logistical challenges posed by the Himalayan terrain, Bhusal outlined the clinic's contingency plans, including access to supplementary resources from the Pangboche health post for urgent cases.

The significance of the clinic transcends mere convenience, offering a lifeline to trekkers and mountaineers navigating treacherous terrain. By providing crucial first aid, the clinic enables patients to recuperate onsite or facilitates their safe transfer to lower-altitude facilities for further care.

In collaboration with the Himalayan Rescue Association, the clinic strengthens its reach, ensuring a coordinated response to medical emergencies during the bustling mountaineering season.

As Bhusal reiterated, "Our primary goal is to ensure that no individual succumbs to preventable ailments due to inadequate medical care. By extending our services, we endeavor to make Himalayan exploration safer and more accessible for all."
