Kathmandu, March 21 - Tourists can now travel to Nepal's restricted trekking areas with a single permit, even if they are traveling alone.
According to the Department of Immigration, solo hikers will now be allowed to get trekking permits for restricted areas. Earlier, individual trekkers were not usually given such permits, which meant they often had to find a trekking partner before applying.
The department said the earlier rule was causing inconvenience to tourists and also affecting tourism promotion. Tikaram Dhakal, director and spokesperson for the department, said the new decision was made to make travel easier while still following existing laws and regulations.
Under the current rules, trekkers must still apply through a registered agency and must be accompanied by a trekking guide. The agency will also be fully responsible for rescue operations in case of an emergency.
At the same time, the department has set a limit of up to seven hikers in one group when permits are obtained through an agency. It said the decision was made with safety in mind, as it can be difficult for a single guide to properly monitor a large group in restricted areas.
The department has also added an online system for applying for these permits.
Another important change is that foreign trekkers no longer need to provide a Nepal visa number when applying for a trekking permit. This means tourists can now apply for the permit from their home country.
According to the department, foreign tourists will now receive trekking permission based on their visa application number. Nepal has restricted trekking areas in 13 districts, and foreign nationals must get a permit from the Department of Immigration before visiting them.
