Pokhara International Airport is set to welcome direct flights to Bhutan, marking a significant milestone in regional air connectivity. Bhutan Airlines will operate Paro–Pokhara–Paro charter flights, while Universal Tours and Travel (UTT) has announced plans for four charter flights starting September 28.
Parashar Prasai, operator of UTT, confirmed that charter flights have been scheduled for September 28, October 2, 6, and 10. Bhutan Airlines, with a seating capacity of 126, will operate the flights, accompanied by specially prepared four-night, five-day travel packages.
Prasai added, "With continuous efforts, international flights from Pokhara are entirely possible. For this, the government should provide encouragement to airlines." Industry observers believe that the launch of flights between Pokhara and Paro could pave the way for regular international services in the near future.
Dhanaraj Acharya, mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City, highlighted that direct flights between Pokhara and Bhutan will boost tourism in both countries. He stated, "We believe this will make a significant contribution in connecting Pokhara to the international market. Let us all take initiatives from our respective positions to ensure its continuity." Acharya also expressed optimism that regular flights may commence following Prime Minister K.P. Oli's upcoming visit to India.
Pom Narayan Shrestha, outgoing chairman of the Pokhara Tourism Council, expressed excitement over the announcement of the Pokhara–Paro international charter flights. Urging all three levels of government to support regular flights, he added that as services operate between Pokhara, Paro, and other destinations in line with government plans, airfares are expected to become more affordable, allowing tourists to fully enjoy the region's natural beauty.
Shrestha added, "With the continuation of international flights from Pokhara Airport, we have also prepared attractive discount packages across hotels, restaurants, and all tourism-related sectors. Our ongoing efforts are guided by the goal of connecting Pokhara to destinations worldwide."
Currently, Bhutan Airlines operates four weekly flights between Bhutan and Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Sichuan Airlines has previously conducted charter flights to Pokhara and is seeking approval from Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority to operate a Pokhara–Sichuan–Australia route. Himalayan Airlines operates flights from Pokhara to Chengdu and regular flights to Lhasa, while Himalaya Airlines runs one weekly flight on the Kathmandu–Lhasa–Pokhara–Lhasa–Kathmandu route.
Pokhara International Airport, inaugurated on January 1, 2023, is expected to become a busy hub with services from Himalaya Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Bhutan Airlines.
