I was supposed to do the Annapurna Circuit in 14 days. Long story short; I got violently sick and they took care of me like a mother to her only young child. They pampered me until I got better. I had an awesome time despite getting sick and would highly and strongly recommend Third Rock Adventures. Let me give you the details. Before leaving I have been so nervous and excited for three days, I barely slept. I didn't sleep at all on the flight and it took me about 27 hours including wait time for connections. First night in Kathmandu, I slept for about 2 hours. Next day was go time. We left the hotel around 5:30am to catch the cramped minibus to Besisahar. Then a shared Jeep to Chame. By the time we got there it was 9PM. We had a quick dinner and went to sleep. Unfortunately, I did not - again. Spend the whole night tossing and turning. At this point, it has been about 5 days and I slept for less than 8 hours.

My body was in complete overdrive, nevertheless, I was still excited and ready to go. At breakfast, my body began to show signs of breakdown, but I ignored it because I have been waiting for this moment for about 30 years as it was my main to-do bucket list goal. And because I felt extremely fit. I've been a marathon runner for over 23 years and triathlete for 10 years. I workout at least 5 - 7 hours a week and most recently shifted my training towards trekking in the last couple of months. I got this. But after one bite of the breakfast omelet, I had to vomit multiple times. I should have stopped, but I brushed it off and marched on, finally heading for the trails. Lets just say that 3 hours into the 10 hour hike, I started puking again and had to turn back. The punking restarted after a couple hours of rest back in the tea house. It got so bad that Jaya (my guide) took control and called a private jeep to take me back to Besisahar. Mind you, we were not very high up at this point, only about 8,800 feet, just the start of the hike. But my body was overwhelmed from lack of sleep which exaggerated the effect of altitude sickness. After a 3 hour descent to Besisahar, I began to feel better and we decided to stay the night in Jagat. Jaya kept checking in on me to make sure I was okay.

He was genuinely concerned; at one point, he even asked me to rest my head on his lap if I needed to during the ride. As soon as I got out of the Jeep, the puking started all over again. The next morning after another restless night, I couldn’t take it anymore. I had puked so much even my ribs and my chest started to cramp. I made a very rash decision - I canceled the rest of my hike and changed my flight to leave two days later. I lost my focus and desire. So Jaya rushed me into another Jeep back to Besisahar to the ER. All my vitals were fine and was told that the effects of the altitude sickness was already beginning to wane. But they gave me an IV and some medicine to calm me down and I dozed off for about an hour. Afterwards, we decided to head back to Kathmandu to see Naba. So what was so great about the trip? My headache started to clear midway back to Kathmandu. 8 hours later, by the time we got back to the hotel; after I showered, took the massage available in the hotel, was back to my old self again in a short time, despite still having no sleep. That night I met with Naba and his staff. He not only assured me that it would make everything right, but took me and along with his staff drinking and partying downstairs to cheer me up. I felt really connected with the team and felt that they cared about my safety. They wanted me to have a good time.

The next day, Java gave me a tour of four different temples. We had a great time learning about the Nepalis cultures, customs, and its history. My most memorable times were spent on rooftop bars/restaurants looking over the temples and talking about our families and wives. He even took time to help me buy gifts for my family. And when we were done, we met with Naba once again to have drinks and dinner. I felt really valued. What kind of owner makes so much effort to make sure his client is happy? In total, we had three dinners together and he picked up the tabs. Where I come from, this is unheard of. This is the kind of customer service Third Rock Adventures offers. These kind acts not only salvaged my trips but made it so that I would want to go back again.
