Kanchenjunga Trek - 24 days

Kanchenjunga Trek - 24 days

The Kanchenjunga Trek is a remarkable long remote trek into Nepal's most isolated areas of far-eastern Nepal. During the journey, you'll explore the area around Kanchenjunga, the second-highest mountain in Nepal and the third highest mountain in the world. This mystical mountain range lies on the border of Nepal and India (Sikkim).

Unlike other trekking destinations such as Everest and Annapurna, the Kanchenjunga trekking route is less crowded and often considered the best off-beaten treks in Nepal. This thrilling trekking package combines both Kanchenjunga north and Kanchenjunga south base camp Trek, so it is also called Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek or Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek.

The 24-days Kanchenjunga circuit trek begins after you fly to Bhadrapur from Kathmandu. From here, you'll take a drive to Mitlung via Taplejung. You'll observe the gradual change in landscape from flatland to hills and mountains during the trek. It is an unforgettable adventure journey into the heart of the Himalayas and high mountain valleys.

In the first half of the Kanchenjunga Trek, you start a trekking journey to the northern base camp from Mitlung village. The route follows the completely rocky terrain and passes through typical villages such as Chiruwa, Taplethok, Sukethum, Amjilosa, Gyabla, and Ghunsa. While passing through several settlements along the route, you'll witness a diversity of rural Nepalese culture and lifestyle.

On the way to the north base camp, you come across seasonal settlements like Kambachen and Lhonak. One of the major highlights of this circuit trek is Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, also known as Pang Pema. The base camp rewards you with magical views of the massif Kanchenjunga range, Januu Himal, Chang Himal, and many other peaks covered with ice and snow.

The off-beaten trekking route lies under the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project. The area hosts several endangered species such as blue sheep, snow leopard, black bear, red panda, etc. Enjoying an amazing panoramic sight of Kanchenjunga Glacier, Mera Peak, you will retrace your path back to Ghunsa.

In the second half of the Kanchenjunga Trek Nepal, you'll follow the challenging yet very scenic passes, namely Selele La, Mirgin La, and Sinon La to Tseram. Afterward, passing through Lapsang and Ramche, you make your way to the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (Oktang), another highlight of this trek. It is one of the best vantage points to catch the splendid views of numerous massif peaks such as Kanchenjunga, Januu Himal, Kokthang, Rathong, and Kabru range.

Savoring the grand vistas of snow-clad peaks in a high remote land, you'll trek back to Tseram. Passing through the tropical forests of oak, cider, rhododendron, the route takes you to several high-altitude settlements. Tortong, Yamphudin, Phumphe Danda, Kande Bhanjyang, and Lali Kharka are some major villages you come across while way back to Suketar.

Lastly, you fly back to Kathmandu and bid farewell to the beautiful far-eastern region of Nepal. Then eventually you'll take a flight back to your home. Thus, your Kanchenjunga trek concludes with great moments and memories!

Likewise, you can continue or plan your next adventure in the immensely beautiful country of Nepal. We offer you some best treks and cultural tours across Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Tibet.

Best Time for Kanchenjunga Trek

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best time for Kanchenjunga Trek. During these seasons, the weather conditions are favorable for trekking. The trail will be dry, and the skies are crystal clear with the best mountain scenery. Likewise, in both seasons, the tracks are not slippery, and easy to cross the high mountain passes with incredible views of snow-clad peaks. In addition, the colorful Rhododendrons also bloom beautifully in this region, especially during the spring season.

Kanchenjunga Trek Difficulty Level

The trekking grade of this adventurous trek is moderate to difficult. Some major factors such as high altitude, long duration, unpredictable weather, off-beaten trails, and remote landscapes determine the Kanchenjunga Trek difficulty level. Most of the days, you need to walk through isolated, rough terrains and high glaciers area.

The trek starts from Mitlung at an altitude of 921m. Then, the trail begins to gain elevation gradually and leads to the highest point, Pang Pema Base Camp, at 5,143m. During the trek, you'll pass through some challenging high mountain passes, including Slele La (4,480m), Mirgin La (4,663m), and Sinon La (4,646m).

Kanchenjunga trekking is one of the longest trekking routes in Nepal. You need to walk around 7 to 8 hours to cover a distance of approximately 10-11kms each day. For experienced trekkers with good physical conditions, this expedition will not be that hard. However, if you're not used to such long walks and below-average strength, then the trek can be tiresome.

Trekking Permits for Kanchenjunga Trek

Kanchenjunga is the second-highest mountain in Nepal and shares the border with India. The trekking region lies in a restricted area, so you need a special permit to enter this area. In addition, a registered trek guide must accompany you throughout the trekking journey. Also, you don't require a TIMS (Trekkers Information Management Systems) card for this trek as you have the restricted permit. The following trekking permits are essential for Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek;

  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Entry Permit (KCAP) - USD20 (NRS 2000) per person (Note: There is no time limit for this permit.)
  • Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Entry Permit (RAP) - USD 10 per person, per week (Note: In Taplethok and Yamphudin, there are checkpoints to verify your restricted permits.)

Kanchenjunga Trek Variations

Kanchenjunga region is one of the exotic trekking destinations in Nepal. This region offers several trek variations other than Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek. The remoteness of this trekking region makes all these off-beaten trek variations a perfect example of extreme adventure.

1. Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek

This trek variation follows the South Base Camp route starting from the Taplejung. From here, you'll head northeast, passing through the villages like Lalikharka, Kande Bhanjyang, Phumphe Danda, Yamphudin, Tseram, and reach Ramche. During the journey, you'll get a close insight into the remote culture and lifestyle of different tribes such as Gurung, Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, etc.

En route, you'll come across lush green forests, narrow trails, beautiful waterfalls, and several rivers like Kabeli, Otham, Amji, and Simbuwa. As you move towards a higher altitude, you'll witness the spectacular Yalung and Kumbhakarna Glacier. The main highlight of the trip is Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, also known as the Oktang viewpoint. The highest point of the hike is Oktang, at an altitude of 4,730m. The trekking journey lasts for 14 days and covers a distance of approximately 400km.

2. Kanchenjunga North base camp Trek

This is another most famous and challenging trek variation of the Kanchenjunga trekking region. You'll follow the North Base Camp route starting from Taplejung or Basantpur. The trip lasts for approximately 20 days and covers around 400 km distance. The route slightly varies from the south base camp. You'll come across some exciting villages such as Amjilosa, Ghunsa, Kambachen, and Lhonak. You'll experience the unique cultures of these local people in their purest form.

Passing through different traditional settlements, dense jungles along scenic waterfalls and rivers will fascinate you. The trip's final destination is Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, also known as Pang Pema, at an altitude of 5,143m. The major highlight of the hike is enchanting panoramic vistas of the mountain range, mainly Kanchenjunga, Kabru, Januu, Nepal Peak, and so on. You'll find a fantastic viewpoint throughout the journey where you can stand on the top and admire these majestic peaks.

3. Section 1 of the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT)

Section 1 of the GHT is one of the most prominent trek variations on the Kanchenjunga Trek. Since the trekking route is the same until Pang Pema, the starting point is Taplejung. However, while returning to Suketar, instead of heading south from Ghunsa to Gyabla, the trail diverts west towards Olangchung Gola. En route, you'll cross Nago La Pass at an altitude of 4,776m/15,670ft. During this single journey, you have the goodness of visiting both the north camp and the pristine area of Olangchun Gola. The total duration of the trek will be approximately 30 days.

4. Limbu Cultural Trail

Limbu Cultural Trail is a comparatively newly opened trekking in the Kanchenjunga region. The 5 days trek starts from Taplejung and passes through Lali Kharka, Kande Bhanjyang, Khesewa, Phungphung Danda, and Phumphe Danda. Finally, the trip ends in the small Limbu village of Mamankhe. Lies at an altitude of 1,785m, the village offers grand mountain vistas and untouched natural landscapes. The major attractions of this trek are hiking along the unrugged, isolated trails, interacting with local tribes, and getting some of the best Himalayan experiences in a brief time.

5. Kanchenjunga North to Makalu Trek

Kanchenjunga North to Makalu Trek is another most thrilling trek variation offering the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Himalayas. The major highlights of this 28 days long trek are the base camp of the world's third-highest peak, Mt. Kanchenjunga, and the fifth-highest peak, Mt. Makalu. The trek commences from the Kanchenjunga region of Taplejung. Following the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) and crossing some high remote passes, the trek ends in the Makalu region. En route, you encounter several ethnic groups, including Limbu, Rai, Gurung, Magar, Sherpa, Tamang, and Brahmin.

Best challenging trek in Nepal

This is tough trek and recommended to you only if you have previous trekking in Nepal. It's challenging due to remoteness and lesser-known trail. Very few trekkers actually do this trek. However, it's absolutely rewarding. It's totally different than the previous trek I did which was EBC trek. Lucky I knew Naba and his team. We had the greatest trekking experience.

Kanchenjunga trek

rom the very beginning, Third Rock Adventures demonstrated exceptional professionalism and expertise in handling the logistics of this challenging trek. Their meticulous planning and attention to detail ensured a smooth and well-coordinated trip. The experienced guides and porters were not only knowledgeable about the region but also genuinely passionate about sharing their culture and heritage, adding a personal touch to the journey. The trek itself was nothing short of breathtaking. The diverse landscapes, ranging from lush forests and terraced fields to high-altitude alpine meadows and glaciers, showcased the stunning variety of the Himalayas. The mighty Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world, stood tall and magnificent throughout our journey, reminding us of the scale and grandeur of nature. Each day presented its own set of challenges and rewards, making the trek both physically demanding and mentally stimulating. Acclimatization stops were strategically planned, ensuring our well-being and allowing us to acclimate to the high altitudes. The accommodations along the route were comfortable, considering the remote locations, and the local cuisine provided a delightful taste of Nepali flavors. One of the highlights of the trip was interacting with the warm-hearted and hospitable locals in the quaint Himalayan villages. Their unique customs, traditions, and genuine smiles enriched our cultural understanding and left a lasting impression. The sense of community and connection to nature in these remote areas was inspiring and truly humbling. The team did excellent job for our safety, satisfaction and success. Much much appreciated for their effort and professionalism

Kanchenjuna TREK was fantastic with Rishi

I and my brother took this trek back in 2018, we are keen trekkers always looking to find adventurous and new trails around the world, and Nepal was the favorite. We have been to Nepal already for EBC once and for the Kanchenjunga, we decided to go with Third Rock Adventures. From a friend's recommendation, we contacted Naba and his team and yes, it was a great choice! Well-organized trek company helping us throughout the trip. We were also provided with good trekking gear, sleeping bag, down jacket, and our guide carried first aid kits, looked after us very warmly. We were completely pleased with the flexibility and full board package. We were lucky to have a friendly guide Rishi.

Memorable Kanchenjunga Trek

I did Kanchenjunga Trek solo with my guide Rishi in 2019 March. After landing in Kathmandu, it’s so good to be warmly welcomed. The Nepalese hospitality was one of a kind, so heart-warming smile and kind people.. Kathmandu was awesome, sometime chaotic but the trek was something extra ordinary. For my time being there in the remote trails and beautiful mountain villages, I had complete peace of mind. Every day I got to love myself, my body and the time. I felt so alive every step I walked out there. Thanks Third Rock Adventures for your service.

Amazing Adventure

We had great time in Nepal, the trek was amazing. Very professional, easy to communicate, no problem at all. They treated us like a family and overall trek to Kanchenjunga base camp was managed perfectly. Some of us had hard time but the guide made it happen. Food and room were really good. The mountain view was unreal. Kanchenjunga basecamp is a lovely trek.

Superb Trek

We had an absolutely epic trek with Third Rock Adventures and it was as perfect as it should be considering the post covid19. All the staff was so accommodating and ready to extend their helping hands in times of difficulty. They took extra care and maintained all safety precautions so that we enjoy to the fullest. Our days in Kanchenjunga trekking proved to be a bit challenging but we truly enjoyed the adventure.

Loved Nepal, loved Kanchenjunga trek

Naba recommended me this trek when I was asked to talk to him by the travel consultant. He was soft, kind and really helpful. After having talk at length over phone, I finally booked the trek and guess what I loved the decision. Everything was well-organized from constant communication before visiting Nepal, after arrival, Kathmandu sightseeing, overall trek, food, hotels, guide, porter, transport, logistics. I appreciate how they even provided sleeping bag, down jacket, duffle bag, fruits while on trek. After the trek, we had meeting in Kathmandu and delicious dinner together, a good farewell. Thanks Naba for your suggestion, and everyone for everything.

Great Service

This was my first trek in Nepal. The good start was that the company allowed me to make a few customizations easily and did not charge extra for my requests like making it a private trip. All services were delivered hassle-free and perfectly from the hotel in Kathmandu, transports, guides, logistics. Like I got fresh fruits while on the trek, hygienic food of my choice, good accommodations. Now about the trek, the fresh environment, refreshing sound of Kabeli Khola, amazing views of Kanchenjunga, unique culture and lifestyle of locals, sometimes it’s worth to learn from life experiences of people on other side of planet. The trek was a bit demanding some days, particularly on the day we crossing the mountain passes. Overall, it was the perfect first trek in Nepal. Thanks Third Rock Adventures for making it happen.

Challenging Trek

I am saying this frankly! The trek is strenuous as you trek to the base camp of Kanchenjunga through rougn-n-tough trail. I walked for at least 5 hours for many days. Some of the villages were isolated and with very limited facilities for trekkers. Thank god, the guide managed everything perfectly, and I guess that's how we can distinguish a good travel company from bad. From the first day to the last day of the trek, I was cared and provided good options. I was lucky that I got to view stunning views of Kanchenjunga and other peaks. Glad I did this trek.

Wonderful time in Nepal

This is the longest trek I have done in Nepal. I did ABC trek and Gokyo trek with Third Rock Adventure. This was third time with them and they did the best this time as well. I trekked without any worrie in my mind, but with satisfaction that I was in safe hand. When it comes to trekking to the remote Himalayas, you need to make sure that the guide is highly experienced. And for it, I had it. Thanks to Naba and his team for everything. Next year, around November, I will be climbing Island peak and Naba is already on the line for the plan and preparation. So yes thanks and see you soon.

Explored the Kanchenjunga Base Camp

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is simply amazing and admittedly challenging. I still can't believe I actually did the trek. Honestly, at first, I wasn't sure and was somehow thinking of quitting but after having talked with Naba and the guide, it kinda swirled me. When I was in Kathmandu, met with my guide, and the whole team. It was just a perfect start. The trekking trail was serene and less-crowded which was by the way first impression of this trek for me. The landscape, the village and the different people there were surprises to me. Thanks to my guide who managed everything on my behalf. Well, when we reached the base camp, the mountains were magical. I enjoyed the sight of Kanchenjunga. It was a truly amazing trek, probably the most strenuous trek I ever did.

Worthy trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp

When my friends asked me to look for and decide on a remote trek in the mountains of Nepal, I wasn't sure of this so I emailed Third Rock Adventures and they immediately responded with a list of remote treks in Nepal and I chose the Kanchenjunga trek. My friends agreed as well, so we did this trek with Third Rock Adventures as they promised us great service and guaranteed the departure. Everything was really to the point and as promised. The trek was challenging, and rewarding. One of my friends, Daan had a problem at about 4500m, but the guide helped right there and then. The next day, he was ready for the adventure. The mountain pass was thrilling to cross and the base camp was heavenly. Daan was so proud of himself when we stepped at the base camp. Kanchenjunga was roaring with other mountains. We had celebration moments, the four of us with the guide. Our joy knew no bound! We are grateful to our guide and the company for this amazing adventure.

Unexpected Journey

We had a great time in Kathmandu before we head through the trail. The flight to Bhdarapur from Ktm was a good experience as well. For it was a tough trek, the remoteness added a challenging factor. I had done ebc trek, mardi trek and Poon Hill trek, and this is undoubtedly the most difficult trek. I was briefed that the trail is less crowded, and every other detail before we leave for a flight. Kanchenjunga, Chang Himal, and many other peaks could be seen from the base camp of Kanchenjunga. En route, I visited Ramtang and Oktang monasteries. Everything was a unique experience for me, but I think if it wasn't for the guide, I would have not completed the trek. He was astute and friendlier than I had expected. Thanks to Third Rock for this wonderful adventure. I will never forget this trek.

Great time with TRA

The trail was less-crowded and met very few trekkers en route. One of the trekkers lost his way and his guide had no answer to it. My guide and his guide talked for a while and they gestured it was ok for him to go. Luckily my guide was experienced and knew everything for the trek. Everything was smoothly managed, at the end of the day, I didn't have to worry about room and food. The next morning, my guide would make sure everything is in place. This 24-day trek is one of the adventurous treks for me. When we reached the base camp, the weather was perfect. Thanks to the guide and the team, it was a great experience.
